Meet the Makers

001 Leila

The incredibly sweet but tough Leila walks 8km across rough desert terrain to reach the Saheli centre in the village of Bhikhamkor to train and sew.
She is an absolute trouper.
She was kind enough to show me to the farm where her an her husband live and work and it was an amazing experience. Completely secluded in the hot countryside but idyllic in it's simplicity.

The hut on the right is her bedroom, the left the kitchen, and the section in the middle holds the sewing machine - what a place to sew!

The view from the house in the afternoon sun. This is Leila's very naughty (but cute) little girl, who has to live in the village with her stepmother as the farm is too secluded and difficult for children.

As storage and space is minimal, important and useful tools are tied to the roof. I love the efficiency of how the space is used.

The fields around the house are filled with fresh watermelons that can be skilfully cracked open with your knuckles and scooped out with your hands! Well, not so skilfully by me.

I had an amazing time up there and it made me really respect Leila even more for turning up to the centre every day with a smile on her face and her perfect sewing in tow!
